PAPALLACTA PASS - QUIJOS VALLEY - HARPY EAGLE NEST - LIMONCOCHA BIOLOGICAL RESERVE - YASUNI NATIONAL PARK - PARROT CLAY LICKS -CANOPY TOWER - NAPO RIVER ISLANDS - WILD SUMACO
Two Harpy Eagle (Harpia harpyja) nests have been identified in Ecuador, offering potentially unique opportunities to observe this iconic rainforest raptor in the wild. However, nesting activity is highly variable, and none of the currently known nests are active or open for visits at this moment. One of the nests is located near Limoncocha, but during the last two years it has not shown successful breeding due to climatic fluctuations and environmental disturbances around the nesting zone. Although inactive, the site continues to be monitored, and there is always the possibility that nesting activity resumes in future seasons.
Because of this, any potential visit to a Harpy Eagle nesting area depends entirely on real-time activity and whether the site is declared suitable for visitors at the time of the tour. Decisions are made alongside local conservation partners, researchers and community representatives, ensuring that visits only take place if the conditions are favorable, safe and aligned with conservation standards.
When nesting conditions allow, we work closely with specialized local trackers and reserve managers to offer responsible access for observation and photography.
Beyond the Harpy Eagle, the tour includes canoe exploration of an oxbow lake, terra firme forest trails, parrot clay licks, and river islands, showcasing the exceptional biodiversity of the region. In this area, our expert local guide has located a territory of the White-lored Antpitta, with a feeding area set up specifically to facilitate close-range photography of this elusive species.
Other target birds that may be encountered include Black-banded Crake, Cocha Antshrike, Pale-eyed Blackbird (a highly local species), Azure Gallinule, Zig-zag Heron, and Wire-tailed Manakin, among others.
This tour can be run from Quito or as an extension tour for our Amazon Rainforest & Eastern Slopes tour. Please contact us to get information of the tour details: info@neotropicalecuador
